DANIEL ALLEN  (1804 - 1892)

Daniel had earlier stood guard of the prophet, and he became a marked man to the mobs.  One evening as he did chores near his home, he had a strong premonition that the mobs would come for him that night.  His wife, Mary Ann noticed that he was particularly concerned during their evening prayers together.  After their prayers, he confided with her about his feelings.  As they talked, his eyes fell on her lace-lined nightcap on the dresser top.  He told her of his plan to wear the nightcap and go to bed with the baby, Eliza.  Soon after he was settled in bed, a loud pounding came from the front door of their cabin.  Mary Ann opened the door to a group of angry men, who said they had come for Daniel Allen.  She told them to search the cabin if they wanted to.  They failed to find him, and as they left the cabin one of them said, "There is no one here except an old woman in bed with her child."  Daniel and Mary Ann said special prayers of thanksgiving for his protection.  She said to Daniel, "wear the nightcap always; it shall be your shield of protection."
