AMAZING WEEK for sure!

This has been an amazing week -- and because its getting late and I still need to read my scriptures and do some study - I will take time to post it as soon as I can.  I am still in the catch up phase since December anyway.

We had departing and arriving missionaries
transfer week - with three days of meals for missionaries
baptisms
service opportunties
a discussion with the Elders --- my referral
then zone leader training on Friday
temple - ordinance work on Saturday
Sunday was a busy day

My sister Shauna has been doing some amazing family search and has hundreds of ancestor names to take to the temple.   She sends me more when I need them.  This week was an great week for some of these names.  The departing missionaries each took a name for their temple trip on Wednesday (10 names) and Saturday we completed five endowments and 15 sealings.  I can't even begin to describe the spiritual feelings as the work was done for our ancestors.  The windows of heaven were open and I reaped the blessings of their joy and happiness -- something that they have waited along time for. They dated clear back to the 1600's.

Sisters Orton and Borla
two spiritual sisters who teach with power

This baptism was so inspiring.  As soon as I opened the door to go into the church building you could feel this overwhelming spirit.  I don't know the story of this wonderful lady who was baptized this night, after having been excommunicated.  It doesn't matter.  What matters is that she had the courage to take the right steps to return and renew her covenants.  That she realized her Saviors's love for her, that she understood the power of the atonement, that she trusted in the Lord to be forgiven and to be renewed. I felt drawn to her and was so grateful to be at her baptism. She glowed and so was grateful and so happy.  She was so happy to be baptized along with her granddaughter.  This baptism included two wards, so we had two awesome bishops there to welcome them into their wards.  It was a wonderful evening and I was proud of our sister missionaries for being so awesome.

COME UNTO ME
and be baptized in my name
that ye may receive
a remission of your sins
and be filled with
the Holy Ghost.

SISTERS OF ZION

As Sisters of Zion are called to God's labor
We willingly serve Him with Spirit and mind
We go to the nations with truth everlasting
We teach of the Savior, our Lord Jesus Christ

We thank thee, O God, for a prophet to guide us,
We trust in his words and our purpose is clear
The angels of heaven are walking beside us
We'll share our glad message with all who will hear

We go forth enlisted with Helaman's army
In numbers much greater than ever before
With power and spirit, we'll faithfully witness
The heaven's have spoken and truth is restored!

Lebbeus Thaddeus and Mary Ann Williamson COONS

I have a lot of pioneer ancestors that walked and worked and lived in this area of Nebraska.  I am sooooo proud to be a descendant of them.  I will feature and honor them -- one couple and a person at a time.  Today it is Lebbeus Thaddeus Coons and his wife Mary Ann.  They are my great-great-great grandparents.

Thaddeus was born on May 13,1811 in Plymouth, Chenango, New York.  He married Mary Ann Williamson on January 24, 1846.

Thaddeus was a prominent man in Iowa -- he was the founder of Coonsville which has been renamed today as Glenwood.  We have sister missionaries serving in that area.  He was a father, a husband, a farmer, a missionary, a politician, a doctor, a branch president and the list goes on and on.  The museum in Glenwood is building a whole display in his honor.  (When I get to Glenwood to see it - I will then post most pictures about him).

The Coons family left Nauvoo in 1846.  They crossed southern Iowa through deep mud and swollen rivers, eventually reaching the Pottawattamie Indian lands and the area which became Kanesille - which is now known as Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Lebbeus was a branch president of Coonsville from its beginning on 16 Apr 1848.  He received numerous other assignments from Elder Orson Hyde of the Quorum of the Twelve, who presided over the Iowa Saints, and from the high council in Kanesville.  On Jun 19, 1848, Elder Orson Hyde called Lebbeus on a mission.  He was to go east and collect money for schools in western Iowa.

Lebbeus received another major assignment, as a leader of the lower Pottawattamie County.  He was to direct the construction of a ferry across the Missouri River at Bethlehem.  In 1865, he and his family started their trek to Utah.  They settled in Heber City where he continued his practice as a doctor.

Other facts; He married three other woman after Mary Ann.
He was set apart by the Prophet Joseph Smith to nurse the sick.
Thaddeus and Mary Ann's first daughter- Adeline is my great great grandmother -- she married John Buchanan in Coonsville, Iowa on Feb 23, 1851

In 1872, he and his family lived in Richfield, Utah.  He died on July 7, of that year.  His obituary sums up his life.  He was an early convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints; was blessed and set apart to nurse the sick, was a member of Zions Camp and of the First Quorum of the Seventy; he endured persecutions and always showed himself faithful to the Church; he was a kind father, neighbor and friend.  He served His God, his family and his fellowment.  He was buried in the Richfield Pioneer Cemetary.

Mary Ann Wiliamson was born on August 11, 1812 in Springfield, New York.

After she married Lebbeus, she was known to be very supportive as she stood by and cared for their growing family.  They received their endowments and sealed together on January 27, 1846 in the Nauvoo Temple.  She gave her husband permission to marry two widows who needed care.  Mary Ann Williamson Coons left a posterity who called her blessed.  She was blessed with 48 grandchildren.  Mary Ann was a woman who gave unselfish, and Lebbeus had made their home since their marriage in 1832 in Spafford, New York; Kirtland, Ohio; Springfield, Richards Grove, Camp Creek, and Nauvoo, Illinois; Bethlehem, Coonsville (Glenwood), and Shelby County and Harrison County, Iowa; and finally Heber City, Utah

Lebbeus and Mary Ann had eight children

(all this information was taken from the book written by Hayle Buchanan, Janet Jefferey, Pearl Jefferey and Reed Jefferey -- thank you so much)

This is a letter that I obtained from the historian who works at the Trail Center in Winter Quarters.  It is a handwritten letter by Lebbeus to Brigham Young.

I love this couple for their example to me of service, love, unselfishness, courage, perseverance and their love for their Savior.  At times I will sit on the grounds of the Winter Quarter Cemetary and visualize them as they lived in this area.  I love being here in Nebraska and Iowa and to reap the blessings of this beautiful country that they played such a large role in.

A new commitment

This is May 1st and I must get back to my blog -- don't you agree?  I can't believe that it has been since December.  Time is going so fast.  I have a lot recorded in other places,  But this is where I can share and remember and put with pictures.  So shame on me!!!!  I will do better and will take time here and there to RECONNECT WITH THE PAST -- and share that on here too.  For in D.C. 21:1 it says....."there shall be a record kept among you...."

One of my assignments in the mission office is to go online to our JUSTSERVE website where service is needed in the community.  I find opportunities for our missionaries and then assign them to companionships, districts and even a zone.  It's a great thing and is bringing a burst of excitement and gratitude to our missionaries.  And I love putting on my jeans and going out to serve with them.  Some of the places are:  food banks, pantries, the clothes closet for refugees, charity warehouses, helping abused women back on their feet with helping them put together new outfits, a senior citizen rehabilitation center, cleaning parks and trails and sooo much more.  Twice a week our missionaries serve at the Heartland Hope Mission.  This center provides many services for the less privileged.  We serve in the food pantry and re-stock the food shelves, help unload the trucks, and help clients fill their food orders.  This week were invited to a Fiesta volunteer luncheon and was recognized as LDS Missionaries volunteers.  They love us there.  Our missionaries also helped set up and take down on that event.  Below are three pictures from that event.

Council Bluff Zone and Spanish Elders
Council Bluff Zone and Spanish Elders and Sisters

I drive around the city and surrounding cities of Omaha alot  -- to service opportunities and teaching appointments.  It is crazy.  I still can't figure out the layout of this city.  I sometimes can't tell north from south or east from west -- what's behind me or in front of me.  Maybe in 10 more months I will have it all figured out.  But for now I depend totally on my phone GPS.  It is truly something that I am sooooo grateful for.  It gets me where I need to go. A GPS tells you where to go and redirects you when you've turned wrong or are a wrong street.

This week I had to drive downtown -- 7:30am to the city storage shed to pick up equipment for two service projects for park clean-ups.  The roads and interstates are absolutely busy that time of day.  We all know that -- so are the freeways where you all live.  Everyone is going to work.  I have been down there once from my home.  Still didn't know the way completely.  But I wasn't worried, I have a GPS - right!!!!!  So I got in my car, put the address into the CPS, from my saved list and this appeared  'NO ROUTE FOUND"  -- "what????"   I put it in three more times with the same message appearing  "No route found".  I was confused, worried, how was I going to get there without my trusted GPS.  All of a sudden a warm, peaceful feeling surrounded me and I heard a small voice say  "you need to trust me more".  Seriously, that was absolutely correct.  We depend way toooooo much on our modern devices and not enough on our Savior -- who wants so badly to help us find our way,  wants so badly to help us,  wants so badly for us to talk to him and trust him.  I put my phone down and prayed for help and guidance to the city shed.  I made it there without any problem --- before I left my car to meet Kaye to pick up the equipment, I thanked my Savior for his help and most of all for his reminder.  Well finding the mission office is even harder for me that finding the city shed.  There are several roads you have to turn on even before the interstate and then several interstate exchanges.  I typed in the address guess what?  --- you guessed it--ROUTE NOT FOUND -- unbelievable.  So once again I told the Lord that he was in charge.  And I made it to the mission office.  The next day I used the GPS to get to a park for clean up.  But leaving the park I needed to go to the mission office which was a totally different direction from when I went to the park.  I didn't come from the mission office.  I had no idea how to get back.   I put the address in my GPS and the new message that I was becoming acquainted with popped up  "NO ROUTE FOUND.  Once again I turned to the Lord for his guidance and found my way to the office.

So what is my message --- what did I learn? We depend way tooo much on other things to help us along the paths of life.  When waiting right by us is our Savior who wants so badly to guide us, to teach us to put of our trust in him.  He is there to guide us.......he is there to teach us..... he is there to help us in any of our afflictions, worries or even just in the simple things.  I am soooo grateful for his love, for his constant lessons to be learned and for his everyday miracles in my life.
